Your Prostate & the benefits of Prostate Massage – everything you need to know

By December 1, 2017Love & Sexual Health

The prostate gland & it´s health should be the concern of every man alive, but sadly a large number are still very much unaware of it´s importance, function and how to keep it in healthy condition.

With this in mind – and that the prostate, prostate toys & prostate massage are topics we receive queries about regularly – we decided to put this article together. How, why and everything else in between – we uncover all the basics for you.

Knowing the answers to the questions we highlight below is the key to understanding & ensuring good prostate health!

What is my Prostate?

The prostate gland is a male reproductive organ whose main function is to secrete prostate fluid. This slightly alkaline fluid makes up 30% of semen and it´s alkalinity helps neutralize the acidity of the vaginal tract, prolonging the lifespan of sperm. In addition, the muscles of the prostate gland also help propel this seminal fluid into the urethra during ejaculation. Pretty important right?

In addition, the prostate is actually not one but many little glands, 30-50 in number, between which is connecting tissue containing many bundles of smooth muscle.

Where is my Prostate? where is my prostate

It is a walnut-sized gland situated just below the bladder between the root of the penis and the anus, surrounding part of the urethra. You can access your prostate internally via the rectum or externally by massaging around the perineum.

Why would I massage my prostate?

Regular prostate massage has many health benefits aside from also being rather pleasurable too.

  • It helps eliminate the build-up of prostatic fluid in the prostate gland ducts, which can lead to prostatitis, a painful inflammation of the prostate.
  • It improves blood flow to the prostate which helps the gland produce the fluid that mixes with semen and increases circulation, helping with impotence.
  • It can help prevent BPH (Benign prostatic hyperplasia), also known as an enlarged prostate, which can lead to difficulty in urinating and cause bladder infections if the urine backs up into the bladder.
  • It may be helpful in minimising painful ejaculation.
  • It may help keep the prostate functioning properly which may prevent or reduce a man’s risk of developing prostate cancer.
  • It may increase the intensity of ejaculation, heightening sexual experience.
  • In addition, it improves overall erectile function.

Please Note : If you think you have prostate problems, it’s really important to check with your doctor first to see if a prostate massage is ideal or potentially harmful.

So it´s good for my health, but does it hurt in anyway?

No, it´s also very pleasurable for most men! This might also be why it´s know as the male equivalent of a woman´s G-spot. The P-spot can bring much pleasure to your sexual experiences. For many men, prostate massage can be very erotic and provides intensely pleasurable stimulation. For beginners, we recommend starting slowly with a pinkie finger or small anal toy, graduating to more pressure and larger toys later if you so choose. Always remember to use lots of lubricant too.

So how do I massage my Prostate?

Due to its proximity to the anterior rectal wall, it can be stimulated from the anterior wall of the rectum or externally via the perineum. Using a well lubricated finger or prostate toy, insert into the rectum approximately a full fingers length inside and apply light pressure in circular or massaging motions (back and forth) to begin with.

Caution should be exercised when a prostate massager is used because of the sensitivity of the prostate. It may be tender to begin with, and you may find it stimulating to the point of climax – this is all normal. It´s also very important to note that correct stimulation involves a medium to light repetitive massage, or circular motion—if using a prostate massager or anal toy, the device being used should massage gently – not thrust.

Can I use sex toys to massage my Prostate?

Absolutely! There is a mad, ever-growing range of prostate massage devices on the market – ranging from small dildos to butt plugs and vibrating prostate massagers. Prostate toys & massagers are similar to vaginal dildos & vibrators but they tend to be more curved, slimmer and sometimes with a softer texture. You can get vibrating and non-vibrating options too. Unlike vaginal sex toys, anal prostate massagers should have a flared end to prevent it from being fully inserted and ‘lost’ inside.

Please remember that everyone is unique, prostate massage will vary according to the person, and even when performed properly & safely, you should speak with your doctor if you experience any pain, discomfort that concerns you or strange sensations.
